The 'Remember the Future' Surfboard art and cultural planing hull lineage 1949 - Present day, was on show last night (28th Jan) at loft 9 in downtown San Diego.

Richard Kenvin (Hydrodynamica) hosted Pacific Standard Time (the Los Angeles Getty Museum) exhibition. It was an awesome show and it was a huge privelage to be invited to showcase some of my achitectural works along side some of the most respected names in surfboard design history including the late Bob Simmons, Carl Ekstrom Skip Frye, Steve Lis and George Greenough.

Pointed Nose Option

The Modern Planing hull is an incredibly versitle design. Lately ive made a few MPH's with the pointed nose for the main stream consumer look. My best apraisal of the difference between the pointed and round nose is that, the round nose will give the rider a more lighter whiping turn and will less likely pearl in a tight pocket scenario, pointed nose models feel a little more drawn out through the turn which is suited to wave faces overhead. If you happen to dig the look of this option you can now order any of the existing MPH as a Pointed Nose !!

I am a huge Kelly Slater fan. The guy is a super mind and a super athlete and credit to him for being a truly inspired human.

Ive noticed over the years and especially in the Second half of his career ,most of Kelly’s go to boards have been clean radius round tails.

Simply put, the Wizard Slayer is a Symmetrical double ended outline (nose and tail measurements are equal) with standard shortboard widths and foil (foam distribution)

Further credit for this design goes to one of Australia’s most legendary shapers Geoff Mc Coy. Mc Coy was one of the original exponents of the symmetrical double ended round nose round tail designs, The Wizard Slayer, perhaps the most refined and hp eventuality of Mc Coys designs to date. Hence my use of the ‘Infinite’ graphic to credit the Great Mc Coy.

Because It is not over compensated in width or Volume, The Wizard Slayer is dynamic and controlled.

The MPH front end allows the board to paddle well and the straightness in the middle section of the board give the design speed and predictability. Albeit, noticeably slower than the other MPH designs due to the more extreme curves through tail profile. Like most round tails it will be suited to pockety conditions lending the design to a hollower style wave,

Any round tail connoisseur will thoroughly enjoy the sharp yet smooth transitions in a wide range of conditions.

Order 1-2” longer than a Standard MPH.

V4. codename: 'R-Wing'

The V4 is an incredible performer, a truly state of the art design for 2012.
Inspired yet again by the tail variables of the Raptor fighter Jets and executed as a planing hull design with the premise of finding the perfect balance of maximum planing area through the tail vs ideal direct control through turns.

A slight modification to V2 design minus the split (fish tail aspect) or a variation of the V3, the V4 tail design features a relatively shallow 1 ¼” swallow-tail, with ‘clipped wings to form the Double Diamond Aesthetic of the Raptor.

Further to this design I have incorporated a highly innovative bottom contour featuring a centralised double within double concave for incredible lift, freedom and low drag sensation, combined with small 8” drop channels off the the outer rail points which smoothly engage for surgical grip as the rider puts the board on rail.

The V4 is totally versatile design, Tri fin, Quad fin , Dual fin , or 5 fin will all realise the full potential of the design. Tiny waves to huge waves the V4 will be in peak performance, the only variable being the Aspect Ratio of the MPH outline (Length: Width) to ultimately customise for rider or conditions.

Overall, the V4 is an Apex performer, defiantly challenging for the title of most HP with the V3, Nano, and the Psyko. Pointed Nose option for Contest style Visual aesthetic, or Round Nose for pure performance.

The Solidification of the Modern Planing Hull Concept June 2009

The month of June 2009 was a huge moment in my designing career. It was the penny drop moment when the whole Parallel outline planing hull mini board concept gelled in my mind.

My Hydrofoil range was moving through the second faze of refinement, i was starting to apply some more technical angular tails and vector concaves to the boards and a little 5'2" rounded nose Raptor was exciting me on the prospect of going even smaller and straighter in the foils.

Sacred Craft San Diego was just around the corner and i definitely wanted to make an impact there, so i got in the shaping room and started re-designing my templates.
the Second Mph board i made was the Nano ( from the Rocky Point Reverse clip), designed to be the my vision for the ultimate modern 'Mini Simmons' board i could conceptualise. A 5'2”x 17 1/2" x 2" square tail with rounded corners. i was originally going to make it a dual fin true to Simmons philosophy but i decided a tri fin would provide better control for such a micro board.

The following day i created the first Vector Quad design. 5'4" x 18 1/4 x 2 1/4"
a little bit more conservative volume but more radical in the design, multi concave, multi bat tail designed with the idea of controlling a wide tail with a ton of concave.

Later in the week, i was running erands on the Gold Coast and i spoted a wake board shop near where i was buying some materials. i stoped in and eyed some of these minimalistic volume 4'6" parallel hulls. I thought, why the F*ck wouldn’t that work insane??? i could apply this kind of outline, Scale and aspect ratio to a surfboard design!!

Back to the shaping room the next day: i measured out a 4'11 x 17" on my blank and drew out a square plank-like outline using a reverse of my tail template of the Hydrofoil curve for the nose. I came up with the Transition tail on that board and chose to go the full wake-board (twin-tip) theory and double end the nose, through in a complex bottom contours and a segment of a modern shortboard rocker and rail profile. The MPH had formula solidified in my mind, traditional volume measurements had become irrelevant and the Ultra high performance board sport cross over was born in my Garage of my rental property in Lennox Head.

I called my dad my Dad and told him of the breakthrough and informed him of my feelings of how this design may well revolutionise modern high performance surfing. After first view the ‘Death Star’, he agreed to my theory in principle but wanted to see me ride it first. The next day I created the a 4’7 x17 ½” x 2 ¼” Diamond nose Diamond tail to complement the Death Star, a little more softer features and a new bottom contour that was floating in my mind, The centralised double inside single concave running from tip of the nose to tip of the tail. The quiver was complete.

Skip forward a few weeks, I glass the 2 mini boards in carbon fibre and prepare to pack them for my trip to the U.S . The assemble quiver looked gnarly!!

Were the wake inspired board to much to soon I wondered ?? will the California market grasp the full concept as I have ?? after much deliberation I decided to pull the Next Gen boards from the show quiver and stick them in my closet for my return from overseas.

2009 September. Sacred Craft expo Del Mar.

I have huge turnout at my booth and end up bagging the best of show award for the round nose Mph Nano Richter tail 5’3 or Carbon Vector Quad. They said: “ They are all radical !! you choose your best one”

This was my biggest achievement in my surfing/shaping career and I was over the moon. And I thought to myself it was a good decision that I left the trump cards at home in the closet, they will see the light on another day…….

2 years down the track……

Many modern shapers (big brands and backyards) are following down the planning hull theory formula for shrinking board sizes and apply some of my low drag angular tail concepts (or similar) to their work. Modern short boards are finally starting to evolve after 20 years of stagnation. The global surf consciousness is hungry for change. It was time to pull the secret weapons from the closet paint the up with a groovy modern stripe art and release them on the World at the 2011 Del Mar Surfboard Show. The rest is history…………

BOLTS OF LIGHTNING !!!

I have been privileged with the opportunity to shape some concept guns for Lightning Bolt Surfboards. The legendary brand has stepped up to the plate and ordered some of my new Dual Fin Guns as a part of their revival push in the U.S

The Bolt once ruled the big wave domain in Hawaii in the late 70's and Early 80's. This era saw the peak of the world class surfer/shaper's Gerry Lopez, Mark Richards, Rory Russel to name a few, refining their own sleds to tackle the gnarliest waves in the world. I have always loved the foil templates of this era. Bullet noses with clean accelerating curves. Full Fluid Accelerators !!

It was my goal to try to re-produce this proven curve with all the modern design elements. Basically, I shaped a modern version of a 7'6 and 8'0 Lightning Bolt Pin Tail, proceeded to saw approx 6-8" off the tail before cutting in my (mini) Raptor V1 & V2 tails for low drag control.

I figured losing the pin tails adding the Raptors would open up the turning radius (tighter Arcs) reduce drag (speed increase) and balance it out with a naturally controlled, Parallel Dual-Keel fin setting to provide a stable, predictable ride.

Think of it as a ‘Double single fin’ with heel/toe control rather than a ‘twin-fin’ .

Furthermore, i feel there will be no loss of paddle power as the now wider pod area will lift the tail into waves resulting in a smaller more efficient big wave package.

I decided that the high velocity ‘Tomohawk Keels’ were apt for these designs to combat the extreme laminar pressures apparent in big wave surfing. The leading edge of the fins will efficiently cut through the water with effective rail to rail pitch. Once the board is on rail, the clean parallel rail outline will engage, the hatchet fin will flex and load accelerating the rider through the turn. I have experienced no cavitation as a result of using the particular angular fins,

Whether or not this is a breakthrough in big wave performance will remain to be seen.

But logic suggests, two is better than one, faster than three and four and all the performance boxes are ticked and circled. Cant wait to launch over a few ledges this Coming Winter.

The coming of the Dual fin Big Wave Guns !!

My faith in the Dual fin is no secret. Scientific reason will suggest it is the fastest fin setup but experience has taught me it also has extraordianary control, combine the two elements and why shouldnt the modern dual fin regin supreme in big waves? Even in the Biggest waves. Bob Simmons did it in the 50's with historical success, in fact his big waves were his passion and certainly a major part of his planing hull development, it was his 9'6" balsa dual fin designs were his most legendary. Come the second decade of the 21st centrury quad fins are moving to the forefront of modern big waves surfing, but why use 4 fins when 2 will do the same job? albeit, a better job. less drag for sure! better control?.... i would bet the farm!! and no need to pump for speed and pocket pivots why use a thruster? Dual fin wins hands down in my opinion.

I have been on dual fins in big waves exclusively for 4 years, mainly for my own pleasure and pursuit of a pure speed experience. (see bellow for evidence of my big wave dual fin development) i feel comfortable now that my elements of balanced refinement of the big wave Dual fin is ready for launch!

* Dual fin : Double foiled fins (or keels) set parralel to the stringer or 0 degrees tow. { Not the same as Twin fin} which is: twin single foiled fins which are towed into the nose.

A new uni-directional carbon fibre lamination for the Modern Planing Hull (MPH) range to give the boards greater response, control and drive.

Carbon Inlay Power-drives

Carbon fiber Inlay has produced excellent results with increasing the flex memory of the powerdrive fins. i would say they give the fin (and the whole ride in general) a 20% boost rapid forword thrust and life like feel. This procedure has also allowed me to reduce the thickness the pannel to further reduce the drag through the water. another step in the right direction. Also availble for fcs system, with orders of Tomo or Krypt boards only.

Winter time in California is pretty rad. this winter has been a little slow on the surf front until last week when we started to get a run of northern hemi action.
been surfing up and down the coast quite a bit from The Ranch to the boarder and there has been plenty of quality surf to be had.

My Dad built this board in 1990. ( 20 + years ago) i was nine at the time, i remember it being made clearly. it is a xps vacum baged full carbon fiber with pre-preg high temperature epoxy, sprayed in a gloss pearl paint. i found it in the Atic above my new shaping room at Christenson's factory. pretty amazing peice of equipment, hull outline aside (looks like any current thruster), it still would have to be one of the most technicaly engineered and structuraly advanced surfboards that i am aware of in the world to this day in 2011.

The Vector is a small wave demolition machine. Ultra sensitive ride, meaning if you even think about turning, your already there! The type of board that will want to do 3 turns in the space a regular board will do 1. The Vector loves to keep moving rail to rail with startling speed and will eat even the most weak flat face wave for breakfast. Basically, what you are looking at is a 6'0 hp thruster with 4inches chopped from the tail and 4"inches chopped from the nose. With only the functional parts remaining.
Outline has then been straightened and foiled for drive and to maximising planing speed. Result is shorter, compact board with plenty of drive and control when its needed.
higher speeds + higher control = higher performance.

“For me, it’s all about top end speed. The more speed I can generate; the more radical my performance potential becomes”.

The Modern Planing Hull (MPH) is a design category for modern high performance surfing. Based from the 20th century planing hull research uncovered by Richard Kenvin and the ‘Hydrodynamica project’ including the Lindsay Lord planing research explored in [the Navel Architechture of planing hulls] of 1946, and Bob Simmons planing hull surfboards of the 1950's.

However the TOMO MPH is more closely akin to modern hydro-plane board sports of Wakeboarding and Kiteboarding. The past and present of planing hull board sports is meshed with modern surfboard design and technology to create a ultra modern and unique surfing experience

The TOMO MPH is like an extension of a surfer body. A mind surfing experience…. just pick your lines, and the board does the rest. Almost, like you can forget about a board beneath your feet altogether and just interact with the energy in the wave.

I am convinced that the modern planing hull design will allow surfers to experience higher levels of personal performance. I also strongly believe that the MPH design will provide a platform for top professional surfers to take surfing to new levels of ‘Ultra high performance’. A design capable of executing the aerial manoeuvres only attempted in the Skate, Snowboard and wake disciplines, whilst still excelling on wave face with incredible speed, flow and power fundamentals of all true performance surfing.

TECHNICAL INFO

18 months of rigorous development and testing since first MPH concept in April 2009. I have achieved a harmonious balance of the following design properties:

- Lower drag and increased Thrust is achieved through applying:

. A Parallel (straighter) foiled outline with forward widepoint and:

. Fluid amplification curves. Outlines and rocker.{ typical Hydrofoil / Aerofoil curves } provides significant drag reduction and higher levels of Dynamic surface planing lift.

. Balance of Volume in relation to surface planing lift. {L = CL P2 SV2}

*SIMMONS FORMULA: Efficient planing surface provide effective lift to counteract the riders weight.

- Therefore a reduction of physical length, area and volume is necessary.

Naturally, the lower drag and higher degrees of dynamic surface planing lift result in increased Speed. Both Acceleration and Top-end.

With an increase of the potential speed of a surfboard design requires equal degrees of control. The balance of these two aspects is crucial to a successful surfboard design.

- I have set out to achieve this without compromising with drag induction.

This can be achieved by applying:

. Lengthening of the hard edge (further lift and drag reduction) combined with modern, low volume, medium/ boxy rail profile for sensitive and forgiving rail transitions.

. A parallel fin placement ( 0 degrees tow) will provide excellent control with negligible drag.

. Complex Channel and Concave bottom contours and calculated angular and vector tail profiles have also achieved positive results with low drag control through radical directional changes.

Custom Designed Power-Drive Fins and Keels: (Thomson designed) flex engineered hatchet fins provide increase drive and acceleration through turns with the low drag properties of smaller overall surface area and ability of the fin tips to instantaneously adjust (flex and load) to changing laminar pressures engaged by the rider and environment of the wave, providing constant forward thrust.

THE RIDE.

Ride Speed of the MPH is immediately noticeable compared to traditional high performance shortboard design and requires little energy output from the rider. It has impeccable rail sensitivity and a predictable and controlled feeling underfoot.

. The parallel rail line combined with a significant increase in hard edge provides the boards with the ability to draw powerful, drawn out bottom turns and radical sharp directional changes with shifts in weight between the front and back foot.

. Physical shortness of the design allows natural free flowing manoeuvres in critical sections of the wave and inside the tube with speed and control.

.The excellent planing attributes and low drag allows the design to glide freely and hold speed in even the most flat face weak wave conditions.

. Outstanding aerial control: The MPH’s natural speed, control and small profile automatically favours itself to ‘above the lip attack’ however it is the aerofoil like

plane shape of the outline gives the design remarkable boost and flight control. the symmetrical nose gives the rider excellent control and pivot in a “nose first, re-entry into the wave face situations”. Also, the improved safety of rounded nose gives the rider more confidence to push the limits of their aerial creativity.

. Comfortable flat water paddling. ( comparable to hp shortboard)

. Increased wave catching ability ( improvement to hp shortboard)

. Tri fin, Dual fin Quad fin. All equal in performance with different ride personalities to suit individual styles in a wide variety of wave conditions, knee high – to a maximum of double overhead conditions. ( Each model is more specifically tuned to certain wave conditions.)

MPH SCALE RECOMENDATIONS

The MPH is a at the forefront of modern refinement and hence a smaller more efficient package to the traditional hp Shortboard, using more effective planing shapes and redistribution of surface area to counteract the reduction in size and volume.

. Larger surfers, don’t be deterred , the MPH scales perfectly to suit just about any surfers needs. If you can ride a regular hp shortboard – you can ride a MPH
More comfortably, in fact!

Please refer to the following sizing recommendations.

. 6 “ –8 ” shorter than traditional all-round Shortboard. [ reduction in length in relation to the surfer ability] : 6” for Surfers of average ability or fitness, 7-8” for Advanced to professional surfers.

. Same width as customer’s ideal width for all round shortboard or general wave conditions. (Daily Driver)

. Same thickness as generally ideal for the customers weight.

Example: if you ride 6’2” x 18 ½” x 2 ¼” HP Shortboard of Average to good level rider . You will ride 5’8” x 18 ½” x 2 ¼” MPH .

Rockstar pro surfer and all around hellman Pat Millan (5'10"/ 170lbs) reported surprising tail control due to the claw like teeth of the Transition tail, even in Punchy tradewind Rocky Lefts in Hawaii.

2. Hydrofoil Diamond. 5'6" x 17 3/4" x 2 1/8" Designed for my entry into wqs event in Japan 09, i thought i would throw a back fin on my V1 on my Hydro design, for contest surfing, seemed to work well enough for a respectable 5th place result.

No problems here.

Traditional logic tells us that a wide tail or 'pod' will provide a board with a high planing speed potentiual however will be slidely, poor control and pop out. Sound about right?

I came across this new model Dane Reynolds ingeniously engineered with a hand saw. I like Dane, he is doing the most amazing futuristic surfing on the planet and he is taking upon himself to redesign his own equipment with no tools other than his own intuition.

The only function that the last 4inches " of tail of a traditional (dinosaur) shortboard is provide drag. see http://marinelayerproductions.com for evidence of a clear improvement in a dated design, with simple reduction of un-neccesary surface area.

I have played around here and there on one of dads airmats in the past, but never really had the motivation to learn how to ride it properly because of my continued focus on pushing the limits of performance surfing equipment , however the other week i finally gave Dads new Krypt super mat my full focus of attention. Firstly, its nothing like a bodyboard whatsoever, its more of a pure speed experience. tricks or spins arent even part of the equation. Its more about high line trim and harnessing the invisable pressure waves and power pockets. Your tapping into the source at a higher level than surfing and that is something very rewarding and exciting because it is an egoless experience, just you and the ocean and frictionless speed. the closest thing to being a dolphin.

This is the first instalment of a series of chapters in my wide and colourfull adventures around the globe chasing Surf.

June 2006. Southern Sumatra Indonesia.

After arriving in Jakarta in East Java i met up with the hard core indo surf crew which included Californias Travis Potter, Brian Conoly,Brett Swartz, Micah Byrne, Brandon Tipton and Ben Knight -and an array of film crew ready to capture the trails and tribulations of a discovery misson, deep in The jungle areas of far south Sumartra, Home of some of the deadliest indonesian wildlife, malaria hot-zone and apparentlty some untouched indo gold in the form of empty barrels.

After like 20 hours sqweezed into a beamo with no suspention driving on some of the heaviest moutain roads in the world, we arrived in some god forsaken arsehole of the earth city where i imagine barely a whiteman has set foot. First mission was to find a fishing boat with a crew willing and capable of a surf expedition into the untouched wild coast of the area, after a day of searching and haggling with local fishermen, we found our crew and our ship for a reasonble price, a raty chicken boat none the less with not even enough deck space to sleep the entire crew. filled with Chickens, a goat , 5000 packets of mi-goreng and 20 case of Anker beer, which would be gleefuly drunken warm.

We set off on our voyage up the coast. about 12hrs steam we reach a tranquil bay on the inside of a small peninsular where we anrchored for the night. The next morning we waxed our boards and paddled our boards ashore and set off into the jungle to cross the peninsular in search of waves on the other side. No one expected to find what was waiting on the otherside, a beach break of all things and not any ordinary beach break, but a fully fledged sumatran Puerto Escondido style peaks in the double overhead size. Ive been preaching for some time now that i beleive the foil ( the aerofoil/Hydrofoil curve) is the fastest, most efficient outline through the water. The challenge has been to correctly balance the overal volume, rocker, rail length and tail configurations to maximimise control and maneuverabilty. The Hydrofoil range has been a great success, opening peoples eyes to the possibilities of straighter foil orientated outlines. Normally the straight rail line through the tail will result in an excessively wide tail, which is fast but difficult to control. But when you reduce the wide point of the plain shape, you will increase the angle of attack of the foil which will

result in a narrow tail pod. After continued experimentation with this concept, i have reduced the lengths, widths and volume of my design to the point that i decided i could close the split tail formula to allow the design to be setup as a tri-fin. The boards performed great, retaining both the speed and transition feel of the dual fin and the 'on the button' controled turning of the thruster.it was major contribtor in my finals performance in the Japan qs' back in september when i shaped it. Hopefully it will help people understand that these outline should be veiwed (imo) as a modern performance outline that will eventualy replace the traditional thruster curve as the highest performace board category.

5'2" x 17 1/2" x 2" round nose/ squash tail. Hydrodynamic planning hull formula (ultra parrallel outline, deep single concave and hard edge running forward of the front foot. This board is radical! easily the most high performace small to med wave board i have ever rode, im actually just getting used to it after a few weeks riding it. You can do pretty much anything you can imagine on this board, it is stupidly fast, it projects clean, powerfull drawn out turns and the tri-fin gives you the control to jam the board in places on a wave that seem near impossible. This reverse at Rocky point the other day is a perfect example of what im talking about, the board felt like it wanted to do this turn on its own, all i had to do hold on and keep my mind flexible. Enjoy.

The FA-16 was a real breakthrough design for me when i built my first one back in 2007. It was a culmination of lots of ideas i had about low drag planning at the time. The whole design came together much better than i had initially expected with all the channels falling cleanly into place, feeding the water-flow into the 6 release points around the Jet-Tail and flyer's. The channels also give the dual fin design great directional control and unlike most thruster channel bottom designs performs surprisingly well in small junky conditions due to pockets of air that flow through the channels, giving the board less wetted surface area through the tail and a loose yet controled rail-to-rail transition.

Small south swell a couple of weeks ago riding 5'7" 17 3/4" 2 1/8" Quad power-drive V2 Quadrafoil. Im really enjoying this board, smooth transitions and the power is always on tap. The quad models are a good transitional boards stepping off from a thruster, Noticeably faster yet control remains very predicable in contrast to the squirty and more sensitive dual power-drive keels. I liken the performance feel to 4wd performance cars in contrast to rear wheel drive. Enjoy. Tomo.

When in pursuit for design innovation you have to look beyond what is current. I look for inspiration in many places however never losing sight of the goal, higher-performance. I have been intrigued by the designs of the Lockheed-Martin fighter Jets, especially the F-15 and F-22. The profile of the tail wings which primarily control the maneouvering, allowing the craft to pull radical controled turns at high speeds, a trait that obviously would benifit a planning hull that also finds its design roots in aerodynamics. It is a fact that Air and Water both behave with the same mechanics in regards to fluid-dynamics, so why not look to the sky for knowledge and inspiration especially when thats exactly where i design my surfboards to perform.

Im often asked about the performance of the dual-fin on the backhand. Many people accociate two fin boards as twinnies or fish and Control is sometimes compromised in pursuit of Speed. After a series of servere storms in May the sandbars that are famous for producing long groomed righthanders at local points have been emploded, leaving behind new little reef setups in unexpected places. I think this is the first time i can remember going left in June!! Here is a couple of fun little winter sessions at home in Nth Coast NSW on my new Raptor Afterburner 4-channel 5'6" x 17 1/2"x 2 1/8". ENJOY.

Drive thru Northern Japan

After a solid stint of shaping in Shizouka, we hit the road in the Bros Camper for a one week promo road trip to the northern Japan focusing on core surf shops in Fukushima, Ibaraki and Chiba. Waves were nothing to rave about but we had some fun waist to shoulder sessions in the less crowded country stretches and many freindly faces along the way.
